HistoryAfter Greece was decimated during WWII, large numbers of people were forced to immigrate to other countries, many coming across the globe to start a new life in Australia. Landing here our decedents or first generation as we fondly refer to them, quickly created a network of social clubs designed to support each other so far from their native home. These clubs were often specific for people from particular regions of the mainland or individual islands, recognising the significant cultural and historical differences between them all and supporting them through these difficult times, and helping them to embrace their new Australian culture. Our club membership concentrated on those arriving from the Aigialeia region that spans from the south coast of the Gulf of Corinth to the mountainous interior of the Peloponnese peninsula. Officially formed on October 17th 1965, the club moved around multiple locations until it was decided to permanently locate the club in a purpose built facility in Cathies Lane, Wantirna. Cathies Lane was pivotal in strengthening the membership base making it what it is today. Many 2nd generation Egialians have fond memories growing up attending functions and dances with their families “at the Club” and look back at this time as the commencement of our Egialian future. |
The club identified the importance to continue to grow its membership. The Youth Group was formed in 1982, it was its own club with its own constitution and committee, hosting successful events well into the 1990s. This initiative was a major contributor to cementing the commitment of the 2nd generation to longevity of the club. The next evolution was the formation of the Ladies Auxiliary which also experienced successful and entertaining events. Both of these were a natural extension to keep the club evolving and to help meet the changing needs for the clubs purpose. As the club moved into the 21stcentury, the 2nd generation made the natural progression into continuing the ongoing successes and growing the legacy passed down to them by their predecessors. After many years at Cathies Lane Wantirna, a strategic decision was made to sell the property. Financially stable now, the 2nd generation committee had the luxury of being able to explore multiple options on the best way forward for the club recognising the importance to educate the youngest members, our 3rd generation Egialians on the significance, qualities and attributes of our Hellenic heritage. In March of 2017 the club moved into our current location at 324 Wantirna Road, Wantirna. Proudly named Egialian House, the club continues to work for the vision and philanthropic activities of the 1st generation while growing membership, by embracing new Egialians from all ages, their extended families and friends |
